A photography book has 40 two-sided pages of pictures, each of which is 1/24 inch thick, where each two-sided page is preceded by a protective 1/60 inch

thick piece of paper, and each side of the book is bound by a 1/4 inch cover. What is the total thickness of the book?

This problem sounds familiar. I have solved this problem before...

 

Front cover  1/4 

Back cover  1/4

Total thus far is 1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4 = 1/2

 

   protective sheet of paper 1/60

            2 sided pages of pictures:  1/24 x 2 = 2/24 = 1/12

   Total for 2 pages of pictures and 1 protective sheet is 1/60 + 1/12 = 1/60 + 5/60  = 6/60 = 1/10

 

   There are 40 of those sets of pages:  40 x 1/10 = 40/1 x 1/10 = 40/10 = 4

   

  The total is 4 + 1/2 = 4 and 1/2 = 9/2
