The first step to every research project is to understand your prompt really well. A great way to get to know your prompt is to rephrase it a few times, so that you can organize your subject matter in a way that allows you to better consider it:
What does a career in Fashion Design entail?
Once you’ve highlighted the key aspects to your prompt, you'll be able to move forward with the brainstorm, research, and organization of the paper.
Step 1:
Brainstorm
Writing projects are often times, the process that it takes to find the answers to the basic questions of
who,
what,
when,
where,
why
A quick google search will tell you where fashion designers work, how much they make, who employs them. It will also tell you how they start their businesses, what anticipated salaries they can expect, & how many hours a successful design company will need to work. Additionally, you'll be able to find the industry's projected growth depending on what city they function, or their targeted market.
Step 2:
Organize
Categorize your brainstorm into an outline
One effective way to organize your project is by grouping together questions that are related to each other so that your paper will have a good, logical structure.
Outline
Introduction (When did the fashion industry emerge, background, history, reasons that people find it interesting)
Body Paragraph 1:
Who makes a good designer? What personal qualities make a good fashion designer? What different fields exist in the profession? Is any formal education necessary? How much does that education cost? Once graduated, are there any certifications or licensing requirements necessary? Who makes the designs, and how are those designs produced?
Body Paragraph 2:
What pay rate can a designer expect as a starting rate in the United States? (Maybe you want to focus on the area where you might be considering your job so that the research is more relevant to you) You can discuss what ordinary small shop designers make, what high-end designers make, the innovations of technology and computer software, and how that affects pay rates by industry (big retailers versus small private boutiques or online stores).
Body Paragraph 3:
How reliable is the industry?
Where do Designers work? Is this industry experiencing growth in the next five years? How has it grown in the last ten years? What role does fast fashion play in the fashion industry, and what are designers doing to stay ahead of the curb?
Conclusion: Why does it matter? In a research project, you’ll want to weigh out the pros and cons to conclude what a career in Fashion Design is, and what a person interested in the field should consider.
Once you have Brainstormed and Organized into an outline, you’ll want to find the answers to all your questions through reading articles, analyzing statistics, and considering the economic projections of the city or state you’re investigating.
Academic papers always require you to cite your sources. Make sure you keep track of each author, date, and website that you read. Keeping track of those sources as you complete the research phase will save you a lot of time later on when you have to list the articles you used to find the answers to your questions.
