Lightning is one of the ways nitrogen is fixed in the atmosphere. 

 

Nitrogen cycle is composed of atmospheric and soil components which are mediated by several different microbial processes. It is fairly complex compared to the phosphorus cycle for example which is only composed of solid phase in the lithosphere. I would highly recommend watching a video to gain a better understanding since nitrogen is a crucial element for the continuation of life on Earth.

When nitrogen is 'fixed' it is converted into a useable form for plants. Most of this is created by bacteria in the soil. There is a smaller portion fixed by lightning, but this is minimal. There is a pretty good diagram in the Wikipedia article regarding the nitrogen cycle.
