In the 1960's, Seymour Papert and the team at M.I.T. used a "turtle" with a pen, controlled by a computer, to teach programming. It is super cool for geometry. See LogoAcademy.com:

For an octagon, the turtle turns 8 times to completely turn around. So, 360/8 = 45 degrees each time. The internal angle is 180-45=135. And 8*135=1080.
