The number of boys to girls in a school is in the ratio 15:12. If the difference in the number o boys and girls is 50, how many boys are there in the school?

g = b-50

 

the ratio of b to g is 15:12

so 15/27 of the students are boys

and 12/27 are girls

 

Let s = total students:

(12/27)s = (15/27)s - 50

(15/27)s - (12/27)s = 50

(3/27)s = 50

(1/9)s = 50

s = 50(9)

s = 450 students

 

boys = (15/27)(450) 

= (5/9)(450)

= (5)(50)

= 250 boys
