x + y = 4
x - y = 6
Both of these equations are straight lines. First, put them into the standard slope-intercept format, y = mx + b, where m = the slope of the line and b = the y-intercept.
x + y = 4
y = -x + 4 (subtract x from both sides)
This is a straight line with a slope of -1 and y-intercept of 4.
x - y = 6
-y = -x + 6 (subtract x from both sides)
y = x - 6 (Multiply both sides by -1)
This is a straight line with slope = 1 and y-intercept = -6
Can you graph them?
Kevin C.
If x = 0, y = -6.
