The ratio of eloquent to inarticulture was 3 to 14. If there were 102 involved in the dialogue how many were eloquent?

Set up a proportion of eloquent to total people.  Let x be the number of eloquent people:

 

3/17 = x/102

 

Cross multiply:

 

17x = 3(102)

 

17x = 306

 

x = 18
