Hi Joealis,
What you need to use is this conversion: 1 liquid Gallon = 4 liquid Quarts.
Since Maddie bought 10 Quarts of ice cream, we can convert to Gallons by dividing the total quantity by 4 quarts. Since 4 goes into 10 two times with a remainder of 2, we can write (10 quarts/4 quarts) = 2 Gallons and 2 quarts of ice cream.
Hope this helps!

There are 4 quarts in a gallon.
That means 8 quarts is 2 gallons.
Therefore if you have 10 quarts you 2 have gallons and then 2 quarts left (you can't make another gallon out of the 2 quarts)
10 quarts = 2 gallons and 2 quarts.
