A water company offers industrial users two different packages. The users can either pay 90 cents per thousand gallons, or pay a fixed amount of $1,440,000 for unlimited water usage for one year. How much water does an industrial user need to use in one year for the fixed amount package to be the less expensive option?

Let x be the number of "thousand gallons" amounts.  You can write this as an inequality:

 

.90(x) > 1440000

x > 1600000

 

So you would need to buy 1,600,001 "thousand gallon" amounts, which means 1,600,001 x 1000 = 1,600,001,000 gallons.
