The key on this type of question is to use the information given in order to set up an expression that models that situation. Here we have
7(x + 9) = 7 because it says that seven times the sum of a number and nine is 7
From there then you can solve for the value of “x” algebraically! When I do that I get
x + 9 = 1
x = -8
so the underlying number that it’s after here is -8
