You are shopping at a nutritional supplement store for whey protein. The original price of the protein is $39.99. You have a discount card that gives 20% off the purchase price. You also have a $10 gift card that can be applied to your purchase. Which discount should be applied first to give you the best deal? State the lowest final price.

If you apply the 20% discount towards the $39.99 purchase price, then you receive a discount of .20 * 39.99 = 8 dollars. That reduces the total to 31.99. If you then apply the $10 gift card, the final price will be 31.99 - 10 = $21.99.

 

On the other hand, if you apply the $10 gift card to the $39.99 purchase price, then your subtotal is $29.99. If you then apply the 20% discount card, then you will receive an additional .20 * 29.99 = 6 dollar discount. Consequently, the final price will be 29.99 - 6 = $23.99.
