Levi Jeans Company at the Silverthorne, Colorado Outlet store sells bootcut jeans for $49 and straight leg jeans for $51. If customer’s bought 5 times more bootcut than straight leg jeans and last month’s sales totaled $8,880, how many of each pair of jeans were sold?

number of straight leg jeans  sold =y

 

 

If customer’s bought 5 times more bootcut than straight leg jeans

x=5y    __________eq 1

 

sells bootcut jeans for $49 and straight leg jeans for $51  for $8880

 

49x+51y=8880 __________eq 2

 

substitute value of x in eq 1 to eq 2

 

49(5y) +51y=8880

 

245 y+51y=8880

 

296y=8880

 

y = 30

 

x= 5y=5(30)=150

 

Number of bootcut jeans sold= x   =150
number of straight leg jeans sold =y =30

     Y = No. of straight cut jeans bought .

 

Given X = 5 Y

 

and Xx49 +Yx51 = Total cost = 8880

 

Replacing X by 5Y

 

5Yx49 +Yx51 =8880

 Y = 8880/296 = 30 jeans St cut

as X= 5Y

X = 5x30 = 150 jeans bootcut

Total pairs bought = 150+30

                              =180
