Application problem.

Question

 Macha skating at 5 mph.  Lilly is skating at 6 mph and started 1 mile behind Mac. If their rates remain constant will Lilly ever catch Mac and if so when will she catch up and at what mile?

distance=rate*time

d=r*t

Macha

d=5*t

 

Lilly

d+1=6*t

d=6t-1

d=5t

equate the two right sides

6t-1=5t

6t-5t=1

t=1 hour

after Macha skates 5*1=5 miles and Lilly skates 6*1=6 miles Lilly will catch up to Macha (Lilly started 1 mile behind Macha and therefore skated 1 more mile than Macha)
