For example, let's say there are 20 apples and 10 oranges.
The ratio of apples to oranges is 20 to 10.
We can simplify this as 2 to 1.
Let's look at it from both sides:
There are twice as many apples as oranges.
There are half as many oranges as apples.
(That's really saying the same thing.)
Let's use fractions:
apples/oranges = 20/10 = 2/1
oranges/apples = 10/20 = 1/2
Look how the same ratio can be written in different ways!
10/20 = 5/10 = 30/60 = 500/1000 = 50/100 = 1/2
Those are all the same ratio!
If a ratio has 100 in the denominator, it is a percent:
oranges to apples = 10/20 = 50/100 = 50%
apples to oranges = 20/10 = 200/100 = 200%
