Brian works in a lab and fills an empty cylindrical flask with 200 cubic centimeters of liquid.  The flask has a radius of 3cm and a height 12cm.  What percent of the volume of the flask is not filled with liquid.  (Use pie=3.14)

The first and third sentences are contradictory. If Brian FILLS the flask, then it's 100% full, by definition.

 

The wording should be changed (first sentence) to say that Brian pours 200 cc into an empty flask.

 

BTW the Greek symbol's English spelling is pi, and it's better to use the pi key on a calculator, where a better value (say 3.14159265) is obtained automatically--this for sensible accuracy in the Calculator Era.  Rounding should be applied at the end, as desired or directed).

 

To do this problem, calculate Volume of the flask, then take the ratio 200:Volume, and convert it to decimal.

The formula for Volume of a cylinder is V = pi•square of radius•height.
