HMMMM...
well we have to experiment for medical research in order to make progress in terms of curing diseases, etc. We need mammals to experiment on so we use the, what we consider to be, insignificant rat which also spreads diseases. Are we guilty if we kill a rat-- does a rat have an identity, a birth certificate, is he Joe Wilson the rat -- you know him, he lives at 145 Oak St. Is he apart from all of the other thousands of rats in his rat group who run around together? Is Joe rat part of a complex intellectual, psychological, emotional, civilized and spiritual society? No to all of the above questions. So, purposely hurting a rat, any rat or any other animal ( because you still don't have William the horse, or Sally the sheep, etc) other than humans for scientific gain is not immoral. However, I consider communicating false data from an experiment to be a moral issue.
