Body cells in are known as somatic cells and they have 23 pairs or 46 chromosomes. However, human eggs and sperms only have 23 chromosomes. They fertilize to make zygote with 23 pairs. Nevertheless, when zygote develops to an individual, the gonads (ovary and testis) would have gametes with 23 chromosomes. Human sex cells are known as gametes.
