Did invaders Take over Mesopotamia and start the Babylonian city state

This question was asked by one of my kids and I just can't figure out the answer.

The known history of Babylonia begins with the famous king, Hammurabi (1792-1750 BCE).  He was an Amorite (does that qualify as an invader?). He ascended the throne upon the abdication of his father, Sin-Muballit.

Sumerians were the first  civilization ever know and it was founded in Babylonia meaning the land in between two rivers, the evolved into Babylonians. Mark M. is correct about Hammurabi but his son was not an invader it was an inside job.
