. What is thermal pollution? Why is it harmful for fish and other water life?

Thermal pollution could refer to the dumping of unnatural heat into the waterways, such as hot water flowing from power generation plants into rivers, or something like that.  Regarding its harm to fish and other water life, there is the matter of the habitable temperature range for a healthy aquatic ecosystem.  Excessive heat flowing into the system could lead to an elevated temperature outside this habitable range, which may destroy some populations of the ecosystem.

I'm not an expert, but I do know this: fish have evolved over time in a fairly stable environment. When mankind's behavior alters the environment as never before, in a relatively short amount of time, this creates a severe strain on all of life, which cannot adapt to such rapid change. The effects of population growth and of CO2 emissions and so forth have grown exponentially since the beginning of the 20th century, and this is unprecedented.  Just a few days ago there was a CNN presentation of a documentary film by Leonardo DiCaprio titled BEFORE THE FLOOD and it was very sobering*. There's a cabal of climate change deniers in Congress who are keeping up resistance to scientific fact, and the USA as a consequence is looking very bad in the eyes of the informed world. 

 

* (I am in Thailand, retired; I hope as many Americans as possible view this. The point was made that our leaders really are not leaders--the people have to become informed, be activist, and then our 'leaders' will follow.)
