First find "unit values" (that is, the cost of 1 pound of carrots and 1 pound of broccoli) and then subtract to find "how much more?"
Note: the question is not "How much does each cost?" but "How much more ...?"
So, let:
x = cost of 1 pound of carrots
y = cost of 1 pound of broccoli
then
(y-x) = "How much more does 1 pound of broccoli cost than 1 pound of carrots?"
The problem states:
$1.53/(1.8 pounds) - $1.68/(2.4 pounds) = (x-y) $/pound
$0.85/pound - $0.70/pound = 15 cents/pound
