Living organisms consume and produce macroscopic or microscopic objects, depending on their size. Even microscopic objects consist of an almost uncountable number of molecules (molecules consist of several atoms or more). So, since living organisms are generally much larger than what they consume or produce, they must contain so many molecules and consequently atoms that you could never count them. The point is that many many atoms must join together in specific ways to be called a living organism. These organisms have many many different kinds of atoms (molecules).
