If you can learn to create apps by yourself or with a few friends, you can sell them for a profit. Only if they sell well can you survive.
I knew a guy who never finished his degree. He got a job as a programmer in the defense industry. He actually became the best programmer - even better than those with a MS in CS. There are programming jobs for contractors in defense, and occasionally you only need a HS degree. The more you know, though, the better.
