              x³- 3x² + 2x - 4

                          *   3x-1

       ---------------------------

        -x³ + 3x² - 2x + 4

3x⁴ -10x³ +9x² -14x +4

Multiply each term of the first set of parenthesis times each

term in the second set of parenthesis

 

x³ - 3x² + 2x - 4

 

times        3x - 1

 

         3x⁴  -  x³

              - 9x³  +  3x²

                            6x²    - 2x

                                    - 12x  +  4

 

=      3x⁴  -10x³  + 9x²  - 14x  +  4

Think of one of the factors as the greatest common factor.  Then rewrite the expression in distributive form.

 

Take the cubic factor as the common factor.  So you have

 

3x(x³ - 3x² + 2x - 4) - (x³ - 3x² + 2x - 4)

 

 

Now just distribute the terms to get rid of parentheses, and combine like terms.
