A drink mixture is made by mixing cola and lemon-lime soda in a ratio of 4 to 5. How much cola and how much lemon-lime soda will you need to make 360 cups of the drink mixture? Solve this problem using the procedure of cross-multiplying.

One cup of the mixture has 4/9 cup cola and 5/9 cup lemon-lime soda.

 

Cola:

(1 cup mixture)/(360 cups mixture) = (4/9 cup cola)/(x cups cola)

 

Cross multiply, x = (360)(4/9)

 

x = (40)(4) = 160 cups of cola

 

 

Lemon-Lime:

(1 cup mixture)/(360 cups mixture) = (5/9 cup lemon-lime)/(y cups lemon-lime)

 

Cross multiply to get

y = (360)(5/9) = (40)(5) = 200 cups lemon-lime
