Percents and proportions

Question

Mrs. Miller sells a house for $179,000. If she earns a commission of 6%, how much money does she earn? Write a proportion. 

 

I do not know how to write a proportion, can somebody please show me the steps to solve this problem? Thank you :)

 Per cent means per 100.

We are looking for the numerator of the fraction with 179,000 as the denominator, and the fraction is equivalent to 6/100

 

 x                            6

---------------- = -----------

179,000               100

 

cross multiply

 

100x = 6(179000)

 

100x = 1,074,000

 

Divide both sides by 100

 

x = 10,740
