A box contains 5 red chips, 4 green chips, and 2 white chips. A chip is drawn at random from the box.

 

what is the probability that if two chips are selected without replacement, one will be green and the other white?

The probability would be P(green,white) or P(white,green)

That translates to 4/11 * 2/10 + 2/11*4/10 = 8/110 + 8/110 = 16/110 = 8/55.

• Since you have 2 white chips, you have 2 chances out of 11 (2/11) of picking a white chip. 
• Since you want to know the probability of choosing them at the same time, you simply add the fractions and get 6/11.
