Question

Winnipeg had 161 days of precipitation. That is 1.4 times the number of days that Calgary had precipitation. How many days did calgary have precipitation?

One way to think of this is that 161 is 40% more than the number of days of precipitation in Calgary - or two-fifths (2/5). Therefore, Winnipeg's days of precipitation is 7 fifths of Calgary's. So, Winnipeg had 115 days of precipitation:

 

161 * 5/7 = X

 

161/7 * 5 = X

 

23 * 5 = 115

 

Here's another method:

 

X * 1.4 = 161

 

X = 161/1.4

 

X = 115
