Doing what Marion did, she took x/y = 7/2.

 

Then 10y = 84 + 2x.  Our first statement gives 2x = 7y.

 

Substitute for 2x:  10y = 84 + 7y; therefore 3y = 84 ⇒ y = 28  ∴ x = 7y/2 = 7(28)/2 = 7(14) = 98.

 

The two original numbers (the ratio) were 98/28 = 3.5
