First we should define some terms. A paradox is something that does not make sense and REM sleep is the interval during one's sleep when our eyes move rapidly and we are most deeply asleep. REM sleep is called paradoxical because, although one is asleep and paralyzed, the brain continues to fire as though it were awake. We except REM sleep to be a different state, since you're in deep sleep, but the reality is contradictory, creating a paradox.
