The term "equivalent" means "of equal value."
So, when we write a = b, we mean that the value of a is the same as the value of b.
We can write such an expression using any terms. So, we can write a2 = b2, which means "the square of the value of a equals the square of the value of b".
Algebra permits us to express equality in different ways. Here are some examples: a = b, -a = -b, √a = √b, a2 = b2.
We can also write inverses, such as 1/a = 1/b, 1/a2 = 1/b2,
and a-2 = 1/a2 and an/am = 1/am-n= an-m , (a-n • b)/c = b/ (an • c)
And so on.
