where did i mess up

i need help, im trying to figure out the percentage of 35 using 40.  the answer i got wasnt right. this is what i did. 

 

35=x

--   --

40  100      35(100)=40x

                  3,500=40x

                    my answer was 87.5%. knowing this is wrong where did i mess up?

If the question is: what percentage of 40 is 35, then that is actually correct. May I know what's the answer you're looking for and where you got it?
