One side of triangle is one-fourth the longest side, the third side is 7 feet less than the longest side. The perimeter is 146. Find all three sides.

we know that the perimeter of a triangle is the sum of the three sides

let x = longest side

then side 2 = 1/4x = 0.25x

and side 3 = x - 7

 

our equation becomes x + 0.25x + x - 7 = 146 feet

combining, 2.25x = 153 feet

solving, x = 68 feet; then 1/4x = 17 feet; x - 7 = 61 feet

 

Proof: 68 + 17 + 61 = 146 feet
