Solve applications of variation equations.

Question

The distance d that a spring will stretch varies directly as the mass m of an object hanging from the spring. If a 6-Kg mass stretches the string a distance of 30-centimeters. Find the variation constant, k and use it to write a variation equation.

 

Using your variation equation, how far in centimeters will an object with a mass of 12-kg stretch a spring?

distance spring is stretched is proportional to the mass hanging at the end of the spring

      d ∝ m  change the proportionality to equal  sign by introducing the constant of proportionality 

     d = k m

d =30 cm, m = 6 kg, find k

    30 cm= k* 6kg

30/6 cm/kg = k, 

k = 5 cm/kg

 

equation is: d = 5m 

for m = 12 kg, d = 5m = 5*12 = 60 cm
