With word (story) problems there is a translation from English phrases (that often leave out words) to concise, precise math expressions (with variables and operations).
"If 12% = 1050, what is 100%" means "If (12%)x = 1050, what is (100%)x ?"
Now, 12% may also be written as 12/100 or 0.12 as needed for the problem.
So, translating:
"If (12%)x = 1050, what is (100%)x ?"
(12/100)x = 1050
12x = 105000 [multiply both sides by 100]
x = 8750 [divide both sides by 12]
[note: (100%)x = x]
