Ratios are written as a:b. This is the fraction a/b, usually already reduced. For some value of x, there are a*x of the first kind and b*x of the second kind; thus, the ratio is a:b.
The total number is a+b.
In this problem a*x + b*x = $40. Or, (a+b)*x = $40.
Or, (5+3)x = $40. Or, 8x = $40. So. x=$5.
The groups have the ratio 5:3, or 5x:3x, or $25:$15.
