This is the general guideline. The Preterite tense in Spanish is used to speak of an action that was completed in the past, or that is within a specific time frame, including yesterday, last week, at 10 this morning, in 2007, etc. Examples: El fin de semana pasado mi familia y yo fuimos a San Francisco, (Action is once, completed.) Ayer te llamé por teléfono pero no contestaste. (I called you specifically yesterday and you didn't answer that time.) The Imperfect tense is used as background information on an event, an event or state that occurred in the past for a long period of time, or a recurrent event in the past. Examples: Yo fui al parque ayer. (Only yesterday, completed.) Cuando era niña, me gustaba ir al jardín zoológico. (I always used to do this when I was a child.)
Here is the answer to the sentences above, along with reasons:
Me subí a un camello cuando viajaba a Petra en Jordania. (I rode a camel "got up on one" one specific time; I was traveling for an unspecified period of time, with no clear beginning or end.)
Sudaba mientras caminaba en el desierto caliente. (I was sweating for an undetermined time while I was walking also for an undetermined time.)
Mi abuelita se sentó cuando ya no podía caminar. (My grandma sat down once, but she couldn't walk for a longer period of time that is unspecified.)
I have a variety of fill in the blank exercises, and samples to help the student become familiar with these two verb tenses.
