Let's consider the time 5:00pm.  Hour-hand on the 5, 

minute-hand on the 12.  The 12 on the clock face represents

either "zero minutes" working backwards, or "sixty minutes" 

working forwards.

 

• ADD 5 minutes for each number AFTER 5:00p

     (i.e. 0+5=5 minutes forward),

• SUBTRACT 5 minutes for each number BEFORE 5:00p

     (i.e. 60-5=55 minutes backward).  

 

So we can write:

5 minutes before 5:00p is.......4:55p (minute-hand on "11")

5 minutes after 5:00 is.............5:05p (minute-hand on "1")

 

10 minutes before 5:00p is.....4:50p (minute-hand on "10")

10 minutes after 5:00 is...........5:05p (minute-hand on "2")

 

15 minutes before 5:00p is.....4:45p (minute-hand on "9")
15 minutes after 5:00 is...........5:15p (minute-hand on "3")
