Hi Jessica, using the equation: A = Sum of numbers / count, we can find the sum of the numbers.
Equation to get an average of 9 minutes per mile:
A = Sum of numbers / count
A = 9 minutes per mile
count = 5
Therefore, the sum of the numbers must be 45 minutes.
Equation to get an average of 9 minutes and 10 seconds per mile:
A = Sum of numbers / count
A = 9 minutes and 10 seconds
count = 4
The sum of the numbers is 4 * (9 minutes 10 seconds), or 36 minutes and 40 seconds.
Difference between the two:
The difference between the two sums is the time Tatiana must run the last or 5th mile to get the average of 9 minutes per mile.
Time of mile 5 = 45 minutes - 36 minutes 40 seconds
Time of mile 5 = 8 minutes and 20 seconds
Tatiana must run the last or 5th mile is 8 minutes and 20 seconds.
