The collapse of the Federalist Party created a period of one-party dominance known as the Era of Good Feelings, which allowed James Monroe to govern with less political opposition. During Monroe’s administration, the Missouri Compromise temporarily eased tensions over slavery, while the Monroe Doctrine warned European nations against further colonization or interference in the Americas.
Under John Quincy Adams, the decline of the Federalists also meant that political disagreements increasingly occurred within the Democratic-Republican Party, eventually leading to new political divisions and the rise of the Democratic Party and the Whig Party.
