Proportional relationships and rates of change are algebraic terms. They delineate how one value - usually "x" - changes another value - usually "y."
Direct variation is an example and can be written as an equation in slope-intercept form: y = mx.
Lines and slope are geometric terms. They describe what the graphs of the solutions (ordered pairs) of an equation.
The two are related, in one way, by the slope. m in the equation is equal to Δy/Δx on he graph.
