You and a friend go to Halverson’s for lunch. All you have between you is $20. If you wish to leave a 20% tip what is the maximum cost of the food (assume no taxes) you can order and still put down the tip you desire? Show work.

Change the percent to a decimal by moving the decimal point 2 places to the left--> 0.2

 

The cost of the food + 0.2 times the cost of the food = 20

 

Let X = cost of the food

 

X + 0.2X = 20

 

1.2X = 20

 

X = 16.66
