You want to meet your friend at a park 4miles away from your house. You are going to bike to the park at an average rate of 10 miles an hour. Your friend lives 1.2 hours away from the park at an average rate of 3 miles an hour. How man minutes ahead should your friend start out do that you meet at the park at the same time

Person A lives 4miles from the park. Given that distance = rate x time, 4 miles  / 10 mph = 0.4hr, or 24 minutes.

 

Person B needs 1.2 hours ( or 72 minutes) to reach the park,

 

therefore, that person must leave 72m -24m = 48 minutes earlier so that they will meet at the same time.
