Teacher Math
While politicians and parents might not be fans of the common core standards, if taught correctly, the standards can ensure greater understanding of mathematical concepts. Students are no longer just expected to memorize rules about mathematical operations, they are now "getting under the hood," and exploring just WHY our mathematical concepts work.
This is difficult work, so it takes an experienced teacher who deeply understands the nuts and bolts of the mathematical concepts. If applied correctly with fidelity, the standards should help improve student outcomes due to the increased rigor and understanding.
