What led to the Plessy v. Ferguson case? What did the Supreme Court rule? How did this impact the time period of segregation and African Americans?

Ok. Take it one step at a time.  First part of the question asks you what led to the case.  Answer this by perhaps describing who Plessy was, and who Ferguson.  What was the lawsuit over, and what were the issues on appeal?  What did the US Supreme Court rule?
 
The second part of the question, having to do with the time period of segregation and the place of African-Americans in US society at the time of the Plessy decision, might be a separate paragraph.  Discuss the reconstruction era, and then the segregated south from the end of Reconstruction to the time of Plessy.  Is it fair to say that segregation, instead of ending with Plessy, continued for another half century, until the aftermath of another case, Brown v. Board of Education?
