That symbol means 'the square root of". The symbol is also known as the 'radical' sign.
It means what number would need to be multiplied by itself to get the number shown under the radical sign.
For instance 'the square root of' 4 is 2 since 2 * 2 = 4, the square root of 9 is 3 since 3 * 3 = 9, the square root of 100 is 10 since 10 * 10 is 100.
