Given only the number of users in 2005 and the fact that the number triples each year, how did you determine the number of users in 2006?

Simply multiply the number of users in 2005 by 3 to obtain the number of users in 2006.

If the question is how many to expect for 2016 (next year), then if you only know how many users in 2005 you need to multiply that by 3 raised to the 11th power which is 177,147

"Triple" means "times 3". It is one year from 2005 to 2006, so the number in 2006 is the number from 2005 times three.
 
So, given the number of users in 2005, we would multiply that number by 3 to get the number of users in 2006.
