I'm super stuck on this, and I have to show my work.

 

There is a commercial where Walmart compares their prices to another grocery store. The commercial ends by showing that the overall cost for the items purchased is $101.29 which is a 21% savings over the same items purchased at the other grocery store. You can reword the problem to say that you paid 21% less at Walmart so you can use the "smaller than" formula. How much would you pay if you purchased the same items at the other store?

If items at Walmart are 21% less than their competitor, then you are purchasing at 79%, since
100 - 21 = 79

 

From here, we have a basic ratio problem:

101.29/x = 79/100

101.29 * 100 = 79x

10129 = 79x

Divide both sides by 79:

128.2151 ≈ x

128.22 ≈ x

 

Now to check our answer:

101.29 / 128.22 ≈ 79%

.78997 ≈ 79%

79% = 79% when properly rounded.

I do not know a "smaller than" formula.

 

p represents the price at the "other store."

 

101.26 = p - 21%p

101.26 = p - 0.21p

101.26 = 0.71p                   divide both sides by 0.71

142.619718 ≈ p

 

The price at the other store was $142.62.
