Question

there are 4 bananas and 12 oranges. Write the ratio as a fraction in simplest form. Then explain its meaning.

 

Answer 1

4 bananas / 12 oranges           reduce by common factor 4

1 banana / 3 oranges

 

For every 1 banana you have 3 oranges.

 

Ratios do not say how many of any one thing you have. It only says that for so many of one you have so many of another.

You could have 10 bananas and 30 oranges, or 22 bananas and 66 oranges.
