The usual price of a washing machine and vacuum cleaner are $650 and $140 respectivel.Alex bought a washing machine at a discount of 8%.He was given a discount of 10% for the vacuum cleaner.However he had to pay 7% GST on the total discounted price for the both items.

 

a)How much was the total discount for the two items?

b)How much did he pay for the washing machine and vacuum cleaner in total?

The sales tax of 7%, from what you are saying, was applied after the sales discounts.

 

a)  The discount on the washing machine is 8% of $650

     = (8/100)(650) = $52

 

     The discount on the vacuum cleaner is 10% of $140

     = (10/100)(140) = $14

 

     The total discount for the two items was 52 + 14 = $66

 

b)  The total discounted price on both items is the sum of the

      sales prices plus 7% of that sum

 

    Washer sales price = 650-52 = $598

    Vacuum sales price = 140-14= $126

                                                 -------

                                       598 + 126 = $724

 

The discount price for the two items before sales tax is $724

 

Sales tax = (7/100)(724) = $50.68

 

Total price = 724 + 50.68 = $774.68
