You have to be careful with questions like this.
First, you can use the formula D=P*R which says the discount is equal to the original price times the discount rate.
In your case, D=16*.10 which equals $1.60. So that is the amount of the discount. Make sure you go back and read the problem though. Sometimes they ask for the amount of discount and sometimes they ask for a sales price. Your problem asked for the amount of discount, so the answer is $1.60.
If they did ask for the sales price, there are 2 ways to do it. Lincoln described one way above. The other way is to calculate the discount....and since that is the amount you will be saving, you need to subtract it from the original price...so your sales price would be $16.00-$1.60 which equals $14.40, the same answer Lincoln got.
Very important for all word problems......MAKE SURE YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION!!!
